How Google detects Invalid clicks

by Poonam | 1:45 AM in | comments (2)

We always hear that Google has a sophisticated system to detect the invalid clicks, and result in termination of the cheaters' account. But, how can Google do that? In this post, I summarize those ways that Google depends on to detect whether the clicks on your site are invalid or not. Google will not first ban your account immediately. Rather, they will first flag your account and Google will keep a closer eye to your account. In some occasion, they may send you a warning letter to notify your situation; but sometimes not.

1. IP Address

It is the easist and must be recognized by everyone. If those clicks on your ads are originated from the same IP Address as the one used for accessing your AdSense account, your account is flagged.

2. Click Through Rate (CTR)

Normally, Click thru Rate should not excees 10%. Otherwise, Google will flag your account. For your information, normal CTR should ranges from 0.5% - 10%.

3. Physical Location

Google has good tracing software and technology. They can trace traffics origin down to the small town. So, using different computers with different IP address does not secure anything. So, don't try to click your ads in various internet cafes. That will kill you.

4. Cookies

Most home users do not use static IP Address for Internet connection. In most cases just disconnect and reconnect will give you a new IP Address. But don't forget, Google has set cookies on your computer. They can trace these cookies and see whether they originate from the same computer.

5. Click Pattern 1

It is also suspicious when people click on their clicks and then run away immediately (hit-and-run). But normally, people will surf for a while inside your pages and then click on the ads they want.

6. Click Pattern 2

why this computer / IP address / person is so trigger-click-happy on this particular website but never click on the ads on other sites?

7. Click Pattern 3

And why is it that people accessing these sites direct (type-in URL or from bookmark) tend to be very active ad-clickers compared with those referred from search engine or other sites?

8.Other Google Services

Apart from Google Adsense, Google also provide a series of services to us. Don't just think that it is safe if you do not log in your adsense account and click on your ads. What other Google services do they provide to us? Here are some: Gmail (most poeple are using it), Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Search, Google Toolbar, Google Talk, Google Sitemap, Google Desktop, Blogger, or even Youtube (coz Google has just recently acquired it).

10. Search Engine Ranking

Your website is not indexed on any search engine, not linked by any prominent website, but get consistently high traffic? How come people can access your website and click your ads? That will make Google to smell a rat.

11. Webpage design

How about the "Please click a link below" or "donate us by clicking the ads"? These kinds of encouragement is not in line with Google's TOS. Google can use their winning search engine, or even human eyes to check your sites from time to time.

12. Advertisers conversion rate

Ad click is one thing. But does it bring value to the advertisers? If none of the clicks on your site translate to conversion to the advertiser, you are in trouble. First the Smart-Pricing hits, then your AdSense account disabled.

Google has decided to remove the feature of "Onsite Advertiser Sign-up",which allowed advertisers to sign up for AdWords, from your site, as according to them it hasn't been performing as well as they had hoped. However,AdWords advertisers will still be able to target your web sites by using placement targeting.According to the "Inside AdSense Team":"We have high standards for the services we offer, which means we constantly reevaluate existing features to ensure they are effective as the AdSense product continues to expand. We want you to earn more revenue, and sometimes that means "sunsetting" certain features we created. We've elected to gracefully retire this feature and focus our efforts on developing and supporting features that drive better monetization results for you.You may read the full article here.

Signup 4 google

by Poonam | 1:24 AM in | comments (0)

This is the second step you should take..signing up for adsense.THEN GO THRU THE ADSENSE POLICY. THE MAIN POINTS OF WHICH EVERY PUBLISHER SHOULD KEEP IN MIND ARE RIGHT HERE BELOW IN AN EASY LANGUAGE: 1. NEVER CLICK YOUR OWN ADSENSE ADS OR GET THEM CLICKED FOR WHATEVER REASON.INCREASING YOUR INCOME BY CLICKING YOUR ADS OR INDIRECTLY, OFFERING INCENTIVES FOR CLICKS, USE OF AUTOMATED CLICKING TOOLS, OR OTHER DECEPTIVE SOFTWARE WILL ULTIMATELY BOOT YOU OUT OF THE ADSENSE PROGRAM AFTER WHICH YOU ARE BANNED FOR EVER.ADSENSE IS VERY SMART TO DETECT FRAUDULENT CLICKS. IF AT ALL YOU WANT TO CHECK THE ADS THAT ARE GOING TO APPEAR ON YOUR WEB PAGES USE THE PREVIEW TOOL. INSTALLATIION INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREVIEW TOOL:CLICK THIS LINK ADSENSE PREVIEW TOOL AND SELECT SAVE TARGET AS... SAVE THE REGISTRY FILE (.REG) TO YOUR DESKTOP.DOUBLE-CLICK THE FILE FROM YOUR DESKTOP. A CONFIRMATION WINDOW WILL APPEAR - CLICK YES TO CONTINUE. THE REGISTRY UPDATE WILL SELF-INSTALL. RESTART INTERNET EXPLORER BY CLOSING ALL OPEN IE WINDOWS.THAT'S IT! OPTIONS WILL BE ADDED TO YOUR RIGHT CLICK MENU FOR LAUNCHING THE PREVIEW TOOL AS—--”GOOGLE ADSENSE PREVEIW TOOL” . PLEASE DO NOT CLICK FROM WITHIN THE AD FORMAT ITSELF, OR RELEVANT ADS WILL NOT APPEAR WITHIN THE PREVIEW TOOL.BE WITHIN THE RULES AND YOU WILL FIND THAT YOU CAN EARN SUBSTANTIALLY.

2. NEVER CHANGE THE ADSENSE CODE. THERE ARE ENOUGH MEANS OF ADSENSE OPTIMIZATION & CUSTOMIZATIONS AVAILABLE TO CHANGE THE COLOUR, BACKGROUND OR BORDER TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS. THE CODE MAY STOP WORKING AND CHANGING THE CODE OR TAMPERING WITH IT VIOLATES THE ADSENSE TERMS OF SERVICE.(TOS)

3. DO NOT FILL YOUR PAGE FULL OF ADS.DO NOT PLACE MORE THAN 3 AD UNITS AND 3 AD LINKS OR 2 ADSENSE SEARCH BOXES ON ANY WEB PAGE. ANYWAY, ADS WILL NOT APPEAR IN THOSE UNITS EVEN IF YOU PLACE MORE AD UNITS.

4. RUNNING COMPETITIVE CONTEXTUAL TEXT AD OR SEARCH SERVICES ON THE SAME SITE WHICH OFFER GOOGLE ADSENSE COMPETITION IN THEIR FIELD IS NOT ALLOWED. LINK STRUCTURES RESEMBLING THE ADSENSE ADS IS A STRICT NO.RUNNING OTHER COMPETITIVE SEARCH TOOLS ON THE SAME PAGES WHICH HAVE ADSENSE POWERED GOOGLE SEARCH IS ALSO NOT ALLOWED. THEY DO ALLOW AFFILIATE OR LIMITED-TEXT LINKS. UPDATE: GOOGLE HAS ALLOWED YOU TO RUN CONTEXTUAL ADVERTISING LIKE YAHOO ADS, AUCTION ADS, ETC PROVIDED THE ADS DO NOT RESEMBLE ADSENSE ADS.IF IN DOUBT ALWAYS ASK FOR CLARIFICATION FROM GOOGLE.

5. CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION RELATING TO YOUR LIKE THE CTR, CPM AND INCOME DERIVED VIA INDIVIDUAL AD UNITS OR ANY OTHER CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION THEY MAY REVEAL TO YOU ARE NOT TO BE DISCLOSED. YOU MAY MAKE PUBLIC THE TOTAL MONEY YOU MAKE AS PER RECENT UPDATES TO THE TOS.

6. LABEL HEADINGS AS “SPONSORED LINKS” OR “ADVERTISEMENTS” ONLY. OTHER LABELS ARE NOT ALLOWED.

7. ADSENSE ADS SHOULD OPEN ON THE SAME PAGE. IF ADS ARE OPENING IN A NEW PAGE ON YOUR SITE, CORRECT IT NOW AS GOOGLE DOES NOT WANT NEW PAGES OPENING FROM CLICKED ADS.

8. ONE ACCOUNT WILL DO. IF YOU FEAR THAT IF ONE ACCOUNT IS CLOSED DOWN FOR VIOLATION OF TOS, AND SO HAVE OPENED, 5 ACCOUNTS FOR 5 DIFFERENT WEBSITES,THEY WILL CLOSE ALL ACCOUNTS WHEN THEY FIND OUT. PLACE THE CODES. THEY WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DETECTED BY GOOGLE TO DISPLAY PLAY RELEVANT ADS.

9. ADVERTISERS PAY ONLY FOR CONTENT BASED ADS. CONTENT DRIVES RELEVANT ADS.SO PLACE YOUR ADS ON CONTENT PAGES. ALTHOUGH YOU MIGHT MANAGE SOME CLICKS FROM ERROR, LOGIN, REGISTRATION, “THANK YOU” OR WELCOME PAGES, PARKING PAGES OR POP UPS, THIS TOO WILL GET YOU BANNED FROM ADSENSE. 10. ALTERATION OF COLOURS AND BORDER IS A FACILITY TO BLEND OR CONTRAST ADS AS PER YOUR SITE REQUIREMENTS. I HAVE SEEN MANY SITES WHERE THE URL PART IS OF THE SAME COLOUR----. AS THE BACKGROUND. WHILE BLENDING THE AD WITH YOUR SITE IS A GOOD IDEA, HIDING RELEVANT COMPONENTS OF THE ADS IS NOT ALLOWED. BLOCKING VISIBILITY OF ADS BY OVERLAPPING, POP UPS, IMAGES, ETC. SHOULD BE AVOIDED AS IT IS NOT ALLOWED. 11. SENDING YOUR ADS BY HTML FORMATTED EMAILS LOOK GOOD AND ALLOW PLACEMENT OF THESE JAVASCRIPT ADS. BUT IT IS NOT ALLOWED AS PER TOS. YOU DO NOT WANT IMPRESSIONS REGISTERING ON THEIR LOGS FROM ANY EMAIL EVEN ONCE. 12. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR CONTENT

SO ADSENSE IS NOT ALLOWED ON SEVERAL NON CONTENT PAGES. BUT IT IS ALSO NOT ALLOWED ON SEVERAL CONTENT PAGES TOO.LIKE PAGES WITH---- MP3, VIDEO, NEWS GROUPS, AND IMAGE,PORN,VIOLENCE,ILLEGAL,CONTENT. 13. DO NOT ALTER THE RESULTS AFTER AD CLICKS OR SEARCHES - ENSURE YOU ARE NOT IN ANY WAY ALTERING THE SITE WHICH THE USER REACHES TO AFTER CLICKING THE ADS.

14. AVOID EXCESSIVE ADVERTISING AND STUFFING A LOT OF KEYWORDS.- GOOGLE ADSENSE WITH CORRECT PLACEMENT, FOCUSED CONTENT AND HIGH TRAFFIC WILL GET YOU MUCH MORE INCOME THAN OTHER PROGRAMS, SO EXCESSIVE ADVERTISING IS NOT REQUIRED. KEYWORD STUFFING DOES TARGET BETTER FOCUSED ADS, BUT OVERDOING IT IS NOT REQUIRED. 15. ENSURE YOU LANGUAGE IS SUPPORTED.IF YOUR WEB PAGES LANGUAGE IS NOT SUPPORTED, DO NOT USE THE CODE ON SUCH PAGES. 16.WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE GOOGLE ADSENSE REFERRAL PROGRAM, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO PUT ONLY 2 REFERRAL BUTTONS FOR ADSENSE REFERRAL, ADWORDS REFERRAL, GOOGLE PACK AND FIREFOX WITH GOOGLE TOOLBAR REFERRAL. 17. NEVER USE ADSENSE ADS AS ALTERNATE URLS.18. DO NOT CONFUSE VISITORS WITH ADJACENT IMAGES. MAKE SURE THAT THE ADS AND IMAGES ARE NOT ARRANGED IN A WAY THAT COULD EASILY MISLEAD OR CONFUSE YOUR VISITORS. WHENEVER IN DOUBT, IT IS BETTER TO ASK FOR ADSENSE HELP FROM THE LEARNED AND HELPFUL STAFF OF GOOGLE ADSENSE.GUYS THERE ARE VERY HELPFUL

Keywords-11

by Poonam | 1:21 AM in | comments (0)

Niche products or services that you can create a website for that will attract targeted users.Try and find high paying keywords and you will be earning more.So in effect you are to find keywords for which the advertisers are paying more per click, build original and rich content around that key word,in which case you are likely to earn more per click even if you get 3 or 4 visitors to your site per day.For finding variations of keywords which are being searched, with regard to your content use this TOOL Then you have to find high paying keywords that advertisers are bidding on ie.. keywords that can fetch you more per click. For this you have to find out the avg cvc of the keywords.A low avg cpc will not earn you much.Select that keyword with a high avg cpc.You will have to join Adwords which is free to use the tool for avg cpc. Once you have signed up Go here.....https://adwords.google.com/select/TrafficEstimatorSandbox Type in a keyword to find the bid rates the keywords are commanding. Also find out how much they are paying per click. If you find a keyword with a low CPC then you are not going to earn much out of it
Check out the recent searches and whether the traffic for that keyword is high enough. Remember a high avg cost per click may not always get you good returns.Be judicious and select a keyword which has high avg cpc, reasonable traffic, but with no/little supply of content targetting that keyword. In other words be judicious, not greedy.

AdSense Video Ads

by Poonam | 1:19 AM in | comments (0)

This option of videos is available only to AdSense publishers of certain countries. The concept is relatively new, but it’s already becoming popular with with both advertisers and web hosters. To those relying on ad traffic to make their money, the video ads seem to do well,as it is more eye catching than text ads. They are more interesting,as they are sort of mini commercials. If the ads run are really relevant to the content, they can be a money spinner. You may be paid, sometimes by views, usually 1,000 or so views, and some may involve a need to click through.
they may or may not pay out more than text ads, they certainly tend to stimulate more interest to a web site.Your site also looks kind of hi-tech.Again like text ads you do get targeted ads, which increases the chances of a view or a click-through.Many may think that a site loading time may increase, but this is simply not true, as they appear as static ads until a person clicks on them.

what are CPC and CPM Ads

by Poonam | 1:10 AM in | comments (0)

When will Google pay us? Why there are some clicks on my ads, but there are no earning? I am pretty sure that those are not invalid clicks, then how come? What is the difference between CPC ads and CPM ads? On what basis they will lead to earning for me? In this post, I am going to explain the difference between the two.

For CPC ad, you will get paid whenever there is a click on this kind of ad, provided that the click is valid. The CPC is the amount an advertiser pays each time a user clicks on his/her ad. In Google Adsense, most of the ads is CPC ads, and you will get paid when there is click on it. Most of them pay in a range from 0.01 to 2 dollars. You should be lucky when you recieve two dollar for a click. Nearly all of the contextual ads and a portion of image ads belong to this kind of advertisements.

For CPM ad, it means Cost Per 1000 Impression. Advertisers running CPM ads set their desired price per 1000 ads served. You will get paid whenever there are 1000 impressions for that CPM ad. CPM ads compete against pay-per-click (or CPC, cost per click) ads in Google's ad auction system, so only the highest performing ads will be served to your pages. Advertisers will need to bid a higher CPM than the existing CPC ads in order to show. Both image ads and text ads can be paid on CPM basis, and both of them are always site-targeted. CPM text ads will expand to take up the entire ad unit. One thing that you should always bear in mind is that, for CPM ads, your earnings are associated with impressions only, rather than clicks. Google pays you each time a CPM ad is shown on your page, rather than when a user clicks on the ad and views the advertiser's site.
So, you may wonder how you can check the earning performance of your CPM ads. Actually, the statistics (ad impression and clicks) of CPM ads will be shown together with that of CPC ads in general report in your account. Sometimes, you may notice that even though you've received impressions for CPM ads, you're not displaying any earnings. No worry. This is because an advertiser may pay as little as $0.50 for each 1000 impressions of an ad. With each impression worth $0.0005, you could receive up to 9 ad impressions for total revenue of $0.0045 without any clicks or earnings appearing in your report. So, you may afraid your earning will be lost when it cannot come to a significant figure. No worry. Although Google will only show earning that is more than one cent, all the earning from impressions of CPM ads that is below one cents will be recorded and accumulated. It will then show whenever it reaches one cent.
Since CPM ads are paid on the number of ad impression, the location of the CPM ads highly affect the overall earnings for you. For example, if you put your CPM ad on top of your site, you definitely recieve more ad impression for that and have higher income, and vice versa.
Although there is no offical figure to prove, there is a general belief that most of the image ads are paid on CPM basis, while only little text ads are paid on CPM basis. To be honest, from my experience, CPC ads perform a lot better than CPM ads. The only suitable place to put CPM ads is probably the forum site. It is because in a forum site, the usual and regular visitors already get used to the ads there. They tend to have a much lower CTR, and thus CPM ads (which are not paid on clicks) are the most effective to maximize your earning.

1. Have an “Advertise with Us” Banner on your site

This is the single most important issue. It should click to an Advertising information page and have an easy way to contact you for more information and rates. Key points: Make it a graphical image or a tab. Keep it above the fold.

2. Keep the ads on your site specific to your site

Don’t have smiley ads and wallpaper ads if your site is site is about mobile phones.

3. Show them the banners

If you currently have no paid placements on your site, put up house ads or partner ads in the same spot you would run a paid spot. (A house ad refers to banners for other products or sites that you or your company own)

4. Throw up a free bonus ad.

By putting a free advertisement on your site, you may not only encourage similar ads or competitors to that product, but the company you added for free may decide to advertise with you. Ask for full disclosure of the performance of the campaign in return. (Total clicks, total purchases etc. ) Key points. Put the free bonus up with a direct URL without tracking tags or affiliate tags.

5. Show your site stats.

You need to show at least the basics for site statical information: Monthly unique visitors and total number of impressions are the 2 key ones. Other less important can be Google PR & Alexa rank.

6. User demographic information. Know your audience.

The bare minimum is Male/Female % and average age of your readers. Other potentially useful information includes geographic, HHI, single/married, number of kids. etc. How do you get this info? You can do site polls, survey’s, or get more detailed stats from ComScore or Quantcast.com

7. Have an ‘About Us’ section.

Clearly explain who you are and what your site is about. And also why you are an ‘authority’ on what you are writing about, and why anyone should care about what you have to say.

8. Don’t use Google AdSense on your site.

OK, this could be the most painful one for most people especially if you are generating a few hundred bucks a month from it already. But Google ad sense devalues your site and makes it look unprofessional. You have to ask yourself, “Do I want some real revenue from my site or Google’s table scraps.”

9. Keep your blog on topic.

If you are all over the map in regards to topics about which you talk about, advertisers won’t know if they are a good fit for your site.

10. Keep your blog professional.

If you are talking about your cat, (Matt Cutts), ranting about your drive to work, swearing or bashing every product you can think about, it will scare away advertisers

8 Tips to Optimize Adsense Units

by Poonam | 1:04 AM in | comments (0)

Adsense is one of the most common revenue generators for blogs and websites. Usually you can drastically improve your click-through rate and overall earnings by positioning the ads wisely, by improving the content targeting or by optimizing the ad units directly. Below I will cover the last point, how to optimize the Adsense units with 8 simple tips:

  1. The three top performing ad units are: 336×280 large rectangle, 300×250 inline rectangle and 160×600 wide skyscraper. Consider using those units if possible, but bear in mind that other formats might be more suitable for your website design.
  2. The most successful link color is blue. This fact is connected with the roots of the Internet where all major websites used to feature blue links.
  3. Apart from blue links you can also use a link color that matches the pattern of your website (i.e. If you use green links make the Adsense links of the same color).
  4. As a general rule of thumb, blend (no border, same background) your Adsense units if your website has a light color scheme and contrast (border, contrasting background) the units if you are using a dark color scheme
  5. If the ads are placed within the content you should avoid using borders while ad units outside of the content can use borders to call attention.
  6. If your website has mainly repeat visitors (like Forums) you can rotate the background color of the units to reduce ad blindness
  7. Consider removing the “Advertise on this site” message from your units. This can be done on the control panel under the “My Account” section, disabling the “Onsite Advertiser Sign-Up” feature.
  8. Test, test and test. Every website is unique so make sure you test with different colors and formats and track the results to fine tune your Adsense units.

Use Orkut on Mobile

by Poonam | 9:13 AM in | comments (0)

Now you can receive alerts about new orkut scraps, New friendship requests and a lot more on your mobile device. No need to have a PC, a mobile handset can help you doing your regular practices on a go.

Recently Orkut launched a new feature and they call it Orkut Mobile. What makes it more interesting is that you need not to have a GPRS enabled handset to use this feature. Just a simple SMS will manage the job. You can check your scraps, get new scrap notifications, view friend's details including their e-mail Ids, send new scraps and a lots more features yet to be added by Orkut.

How to do the Orkut Mobile settings in order to get SMS alerts on mobile phone :

  • Go to My Settings --> Mobile page.
  • Orkut will show you the list of mobile carriers (Mobile Service Providers) from your country. Don't get shocked, you have already added your country in your profile.
  • Now choose your mobile carrier (Mobile Operator).
  • Then type your mobile no in the My Mobile Number field. That number will be used by Orkut to send you SMS (Short Service Messages) texts.
  • After providing the number, Orkut will ask you to verify the number you just entered by sending a text message to Orkut from that number. Follow the instructions and send the message.
  • After getting confirmation, Orkut will associate that mobile number with your profile and will add that number in it's database.
  • In future you will get any friendship request or new scrap alerts on that mobile number. Simultaneously you can send scraps to your friends using that mobile number.
  • All the scraps sent from your mobile number will be posted in your friend's scrapbook under your Orkut profile. Isn't that cool now?
  • But remember one thing, this service is not free. Your Mobile service Provider may charge you for receiving and sending text messages.

NOTE : All of us know that our mobile operators charge us for sending SMS texts from our mobile, but why should we get charged for any incoming SMS messages that Orkut will send us? Note that Orkut Mobile is a premium service. Currently it's not working with all the mobile service providers. It has been associated with the leading ones only. And the incoming messages that will cost you, will be divided by Orkut and your SMS carrier. So, Orkut is planning to pocket some money by introducing this Orkut mobile feature.

Currently this service is available in Brazil and India. Because more than 50% of Orkut users belong to these two countries. After getting successful experience from these countries, Orkut will expand this feature for the worldwide users.

Check the screenshot of Orkut Mobile page below :

Orkut Mobile : How much would this cost me?

  • If you belong to India, you can use this Orkut Mobile feature only with these mobile operators : BPL, MTNL, Aircel, Reliance, Spice and TATA. Other networks are not currently supported.
  • For sending text messages, you will be charged Rs.2 per SMS from these operators, except MTNL, which will charge you RS.1 per message.
  • Getting notifications from Orkut will be free until you reach your monthly quota. After that limit, you will get charged for incoming messages also.
  • In Brazil, Orkut users with the following operators can enjoy this service : Amazonia Celular, Brasil Telecom, Claro, Oi, Temelig celular/Vivo, TIM, Vivo.

SMS Commands you have to use for Orkut Mobile :

  • on or off - Turns ON or OFF SMS alerts
  • reset - Resets your monthly quota limit. Let me explain how it works... suppose you have a limit of getting 50 free alerts on your mobile phone. And if you just reached that limit by 10th of that month, you won't get any new alerts in that month. But if you want to keep that SMS notification activated, you can send a text message, by typing the word reset, and Orkut will add some extra quote to your account for that month. Keep this in mind that the extra quota will be chargeable and that will cost you Rs.2 per incoming message if you are in India.
  • unregister - Gets yourself unregistered from Orkut Mobile service and you won't get any future notifications from Orkut.
  • scrap - In the field, type your Orkut friend's name and your message in the field, then send the SMS. Orkut will automatically post that scrap in your friend's scrapbook under your profile name.
  • contact > - This will enable you to view the contact information (phone number, email, IM, and address) of an orkut friend.

This is a cool feature indeed. This is also pretty easy to use. If you are still having any problems, just write to me in the comment section. I will be glad to assist you

Now Orkut will mark profiles and communities as unsafe they have content that is mature in nature, but doesn't violate their community guidelines. For example, their community guidelines prohibit pornographic images, which includes things like frontal nudity and graphic sex, and such profiles will be deleted. However, our community guidelines don't prohibit images that don't contain nudity, but are sexually explicit, so we may mark such profiles as unsafe. Note that your profile does not get deleted if it is marked unsafe - it just becomes hard to access.

10 ways to become a better blogger

by Poonam | 10:30 PM in | comments (0)

Blogging is the new national pastime--not just for Americans, but for Internet-connected people all over the world. It's an activity that spans all age groups and occupations. There are personal blogs, social blogs, and professional blogs. Whatever the topic, someone has probably blogged it. Some of us get paid to blog and others pay for the privilege of blogging (on a particular site or with particular software).

The Internet made it possible for anyone to publish content to a worldwide audience. The Web log, or blog format, has made it easier and more convenient. But all blogs are not created equal. Some draw an eager following and others languish in obscurity. Regardless of your reason for blogging, you can make your blog better, more readable and--if it's what you want--more popular.
#1: Define your purpose

The first step in creating a better blog is to ask yourself why you're blogging. What's the purpose of your blog? Is it to be a public version of the personal diary, recounting your experiences, thoughts, and emotions? Is it more of a journal, where you preserve ideas and outline projects? Is it a social site, for interacting with friends, sharing links, getting to know people? Is it an editorial page, for commentary on politics, social trends, and current events? Is it a professional or hobbyist site, for sharing conceptual and how-to information about some field of study or work (e.g., aviation, computer programming, or photography)?

Sure, you can have "just a blog" that combines elements of all of these, but you may find that readers prefer you to specialize. If you want to write about your field of expertise sometimes and your favorite political party at other times, it might be beneficial to maintain two separate blogs to avoid alienating or boring your readers half the time.

Speaking of readers, an important element in defining your purpose is to know your audience. That will help you determine the voice and writing style that's appropriate for those you're addressing. You probably wouldn't use the same style when writing to stock car race fans that you'd use if your audience were made up primarily of stock market brokers.

In keeping with your blog's purpose, you should have a defined theme. For example, if the purpose of your blog is to express political opinions, the theme might be to promote a low-tax, nonintrusive government.
#2: Create visual appeal

Content isn't the only thing that matters. Your blog site should also be visually appealing, or at least visually neutral. You don't want to scare away prospective readers or have them leave in frustration because the page is distracting or unreadable.

The best visual design for the page is dependent in part on your audience and theme. You can use color, font styles, and graphics to set the mood and tone--just make sure the tone matches the content. Whatever your theme, it's best to avoid dark letters on a dark background, tiny or overly fancy typefaces, and other elements that make your blog hard to read.

If your blog is hosted on a public blog site, you may be limited in how much you can change the design, but there will usually be a number of preconfigured visual themes you can choose from. Keep audience appeal and readability in mind when selecting one.
#3: Use the proper tools

You can create a blog using any WYSIWYG HTML editor, such as FrontPage (soon to be replaced by Microsoft Expression Web Designer), Macromedia Dreamweaver, or the Amaya open source editor endorsed by W3C. You can even use a text editor like Notepad to compose the HTML code.

However, blogging is made much easier, faster, and more convenient if you use a dedicated blogging program or the features of a blogging Web site that lets you compose posts in the Web browser or via e-mail.

If your blog is hosted on a free public blog site, such as Blogger or Windows Live Spaces, you can write your posts in your e-mail client and send them to a special address you're given when you create your account. For many, this is the easiest way to post, although it doesn't show you the formatting.

Another alternative is to use a blog program such as WordPress, Movable Type, Post2Blog, or Windows Live Writer, which offer various useful features. For example, Windows Live Writer (free download at http://windowslivewriter.spaces.live.com/) lets you put a button on the toolbar in IE so that if you want your blog to reference a Web site you're visiting, you can highlight the text you want to quote and click Blog It. This opens Live Writer and inserts the link and the quoted text in your blog. You can publish to your blog on Live Spaces or other popular blogs with a single click.
#4: Make it easy to navigate

If you're designing your blog site from scratch, it's important to make it easy for readers to get around and do what they want to do. For instance, if you're using comments and RSS feeds, make sure it's clear to readers how to post a comment or subscribe to the feed.

You should also make it easy for readers to find past posts. Make sure archives are organized logically--not just in chronological order but in categories to make it easier to find particular posts.

If your blog is hosted on a public blog site, you can usually change the arrangement of page elements, add or eliminate elements (often called modules), and otherwise influence the navigability of the page. Keep clutter to a minimum but be sure to include the elements that readers need.

Make your site searchable, if possible, so users can find posts using keywords. You can put a free Google search box on your site (for more information, see http://www.google.com/searchcode.html#both).
#5: Stay in one place

Many bloggers experiment with different blog hosting sites and/or with hosting their own sites, especially early on in their blogging experience. It may take you awhile to find the best setup, but try to do so as soon as possible and then stay in one place so your readers can find you. Moving around to different URLs too often is sure to lose you some readers.

If you have an established blog and it's necessary to move it to a different address, try to publish a last post on the old blog that points readers to the new blog and leave it up as long as possible.
#6: Engage your readers

Perhaps the most important factor in attracting and keep readers is establishing a relationship with them. Even interesting content is rendered less interesting if we don't know who's talking (writing) to us. Tell your readers who you are and something about yourself.

You need not go into a lot of personal details if your blog is political or professional, and in some cases you may not even want to reveal your real name (especially, for example, if you're posting derogatory information about your employer or the police chief in your small town). But don't just remain nameless; give readers a pseudonym by which to identify you and tell them generalities about yourself that will lend you credibility without blowing your cover. For instance, you might say that you're a middle-age male who lives in Texas and has worked in the telecommunications industry.

If you don't have a reason to keep your identity confidential, you may be able to benefit (attract the attention of headhunters in your field, become recognized as an expert in a particular area, etc.) by using your real name and providing contact information.

Regardless of whether you reveal your true identity, you can engage readers by interacting with them through the comments feature or by providing an e-mail address and responding to their input. You can, of course, use a free Webmail address or other alternative to your primary address if you want to protect your identity and/or avoid spam.

Engaging readers involves winning their trust and thinking of the reader first. If you make claims, back them up with cites and links. If possible, don't link to sites that require a subscription or even free registration (or if you must, warn readers).
#7: Establish a blogging schedule

Blog readers are a fickle bunch. Once you've drawn an audience, they expect to find new content when they visit your blog. That doesn't mean you have to post every day, but you should establish a minimum blogging schedule and stick to it. Let readers know, preferably in a static text box at the top of your blog page, that you will update the blog daily, weekly, on Mondays and Fridays, or whatever. Then do it--even if some of your posts aren't particular profound or long. Readers will abandon your blog if they think you've abandoned them.

If you need to deviate from your schedule (for example, you're going on vacation for two weeks or you'll be in the hospital or you have a family or job emergency), let readers know that you won't be posting at the regular time and give them an idea of when you'll be back.
#8: Keep it concise

Speaking of posts that aren't particularly profound or long, don't think you have to wait until you have something brilliant to say before you post or put off posting because you don't have time to write War and Peace today. In truth, most readers have short attention spans and/or crowded schedules themselves and would prefer to read a short, pithy post rather than a long, complex one.

If you do post lengthy pieces, break them up into short paragraphs to make them more readable. There's nothing more daunting to a reader than a huge mass of unbroken text, no matter how skillful your turn of phrase.

You'll also attract more readers with common words than with obscure ones, so unless you're writing for a particularly scholarly audience, follow the old KISS advice: Keep it simple, sweetheart.
#9: Proofread before publishing

Even if you're an English professor, it's easy to end up with typographical errors, misspellings, and grammatical flaws in your posts if you don't proofread before you hit the Publish button. Especially if you're writing in the heat of passion or inspiration, your typing fingers can get ahead of your thoughts and cause words to be omitted or transposed, commas to appear in the wrong places, or sentences to become garbled.

Maybe you pride yourself on not adhering strictly to the rules, but presumably, you still want your readers to understand what you're saying. That complex sentence that seemed so brilliant in composition may read a little awkwardly once you see it on the screen.

It's difficult to catch mistakes in your own writing, because you tend to fill in what you thought you typed, rather than see what's really there. This is particularly true immediately after writing. If possible, have someone else proofread your post before you publish it. Otherwise, let it "cool off" for an hour or a day so you can approach it with a more objective proofreader's eye.

And although it's best to catch mistakes before they're published, one huge advantage of Web content is that, unlike print copy, it's easy to change if you discover a problem after publication.
#10: Go syndicate yourself

You don't have to wait for readers to come to your blog every day or every week. Instead, you can take your blog to them. Use RSS to feed your new blog posts to readers who sign up. This makes it easier for your readers, who don't have to remember to visit your blog Web site to check for new posts--and whatever makes it easier for readers is good for authors. You can syndicate just your post titles, short summaries, or entire posts.

Most public blog hosting sites give you the option to syndicate your blog, and it's usually as easy as clicking a button or two in the configuration interface. If you want to syndicate your self-hosted Web site, see http://www.xul.fr/en-xml-rss.html for more information

Ways that Google detects Invalid clicks

10 Blogging Mistakes To Avoid

by Poonam | 10:15 PM in | comments (1)

Blogging Mistake #1 - Not Updating

It never fails. Somebody sets up a new blog and is all excited about it. We see a furry of posts for the first few days, maybe even a few weeks, and then the number of posts starts to go down until the blog is hardly updated at all. Nothing kills a blog faster than lack of updates. If you are going to blog, then pick a posting frequency and stick to it. Whether it’s one post per week or 10 posts per day, make a commitment to keep your blog updated. A non-updated blog is a dead blog.

Blogging Mistake #2 - Blogging Only For Mone

If you’re blogging only for money, then you’re in for a shock. Yes, you can make good money with a blog, but despite what that National Post story on me said, it takes a lot more than “no effort.” 99% of blogs on the Web cannot make more than $100 a month. John Chow dot Com makes money because I don’t blog for money. If the only reason you’re blogging is to get rich, you will fail.

Blogging Mistake #3 - Rushing a Post

I am sure we have all been guilty of this - I know I have. A hot story comes up and you want to get it out ASAP, but in your rush to get the post published, you forget to proofread and just hit the Publish button. Whenever I’ve done that, there have always been mistakes in the post. Before you hit Publish, take your time to double/triple check the post to make sure it’s free of errors. If you spot an error after the post, correct it immediately.

Blogging Mistake #4 - Not Being Personal

A blog is not CNN or News.com. People read your blog to get your opinion and your point of view. Give it to them.

Blogging Mistake #5 - Being a Copycat

What makes your blog stand out from the millions in the blogshere? Is your blog unique or is it just another copycat? I am certainly not the first blog to write about making money on the Internet, so what makes my blog stand out other than me posting pictures of my dinner?

You can write about the same thing as the next blog, but you need to add your own views to make it unique. Don’t just copy and paste what another blog posted. Give your opinion because that’s what blogging is all about. The most unique thing about your blog is you.

Blogging Mistake #6 - Not Replying To Comments

A blog is a two-way communication tool, but many bloggers forget that. When readers comment in your blog, please answer them. If your readers don’t leave comments then try adding these Two Plugins To Increase Blog Comments.

Blogging Mistake #7 - Not Giving a Full Feed RSS

Unless you make 10+ posts per day, there are really no good reasons for not offering a full feed RSS. Since turning on my full feed RSS, my RSS subscribers has increased steadily. I expected traffic to the blog to go down but to my surprise, it kept going up.

Yes, a RSS feed is harder to monetize than a blog, but many RSS readers will unsubscribe to a feed if it’s not full. Not offering a full feed when you do only a few updates a day (or week) just makes you look cheap.

Blogging Mistake #8 - Not Reaching Out To Other Bloggers

The best way to get your blog noticed is by saying hi to other blogs in your niche. The easiest way to do that is to comment on their blogs. I check the comments on my blog all the time and I visit the commentator’s site. I discovered many great blogs this way. Other ways of reaching out to other bloggers includes linking to them, sending trackbacks and adding yourself to their MyBlogLog community. If you’re really creative and have a bit of money to spend, you can even try sending a Google IM.

Blogging Mistake #9 - Writing For Google Instead Of People

Some of you may recall that I am taking an Internet Marketing and SEO class. During this class, the teacher talks about stuff like key phases, keyword density, making sure your content is Google friendly, etc. The only thing I have to say about that is; write for people, not for Google.

You can have the most perfectly written Google optimized page in the world and still not ranked number 1 because Google follows people. And people won’t read a page written for a search engine because it makes no sense. I do keep an eye on my keywords and key phases when I’m writing a post, but I also keep in mind that the readers come first, Google comes second.

Blogging Mistake #10 – Not Reading John Chow dot Com

I think everyone here will agree that this is the biggest mistake any blogger can make. :)

It’s been nearly 6 months since the first post was published at Pick the Brain. Over the course of 97 posts and 1602 comments, traffic has grown to over 3,000 unique visitors a day, over 2200 readers have subscribed to the RSS feed, and several articles have been featured on the popular pages of Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit, StumbleUpon, and Netscape. It isn’t the most amazing start (there have certainly been bumps along the way) but I’m proud of what I’ve built and optimistic the site will continue to grow.I want to share what I’ve learned, but it’d be pointless to try explaining it all. Rather, I’ve compiled a list of the 27 most important lessons.

  1. Just in case you don’t get past number one, my two most important points are a) help people solve a problem, it’s the most powerful way to keep them coming back, and b) differentiate yourself. There are so many blogs that if you don’t stand out, you’ll get lost in the crowd.
  2. Blogging is not a great way to make money. I don’t care what Pavlina says his earnings are. It takes talent, effort, and patience. Only do it if you love to write and have something to say. Be prepared to invest 2-3 years before seeing any serious returns.
  3. Make it as easy as possible for people to subscribe to your RSS feed. Subscribing is the best thing a reader can do.
  4. Offer a full feed, even if it means people visit the site less often. A person reading you is always better than a person not reading you. Make it easy.
  5. If you aren’t sure a post is good, sit on it for a day. If you still aren’t convinced, delete it. A bad post is worse than no post. Bad posts make people question if your blog is worth reading. When you make a bad post (and you will) learn from it and move on.
  6. Be prepared to completely run out of ideas after the first 3-4 months. Do your best to stick it out and refrain from posting anything that’s absolutely lame. The inspiration does come back.
  7. It’s not always what you know, who you know is important too. Content brings people back, but in the beginning you need a group of “internet friends” to network with. Don’t be shy about emailing bloggers in your niche, you’d be surprised how receptive they are when you share your best content.
  8. Write catchy headlines and list posts that will be popular with the social sites. It’s the best way for thousands of readers to discover you.
  9. Do everything you can to make your headline and opening paragraph as compelling as possible. If people aren’t drawn in early, the quality of the rest of the article is irrelevant.
  10. Courteously encourage friends, family, and casual acquaintances to vote up and link to your posts. It may seem like cheating, but believe me, your competitors are doing it.
  11. Don’t write every post for the social sites. It isn’t genuine and people get tired of it. My favorite “A-List” bloggers rarely make the front page of Digg or Reddit. Although these sites are the easiest way to get a huge burst of traffic, it’s important to remember that they only represent a tiny fraction of the internet population.
  12. Listen carefully to every piece of feedback but don’t be a slave to it. Most people don’t know anything. Your blog is your brainchild. It won’t work if you try to satisfy everyone.
  13. Experiment. Take chances. Piss a few people off. Do things to stand out. If your writing doesn’t have an edge it might as well not exist.
  14. Always look for a different angle. Even if what you’re saying is valuable, there is no point in reading if it doesn’t say anything different than the popular opinion.
  15. Don’t participate in every meme or trade links with everyone who asks. If linking doesn’t provide value to your readers it’s a bad idea.
  16. Write about your life in a way that’s relevant to your topic. People relate to meaningful personal experiences and it’s a consistent source of material.
  17. Make people think. It doesn’t happen very often and they won’t easily forget it.
  18. Don’t be anxious to plaster Google Ads all over the place. Before you have a ton of traffic readers are much more valuable than 20 cents a click.
  19. Design matters. If your blog looks terrible, people won’t take it seriously. If it’s too cluttered or difficult to read, people will get frustrated and leave. A great design gives people a warm fuzzy feeling that makes a site worth visiting for its own sake.
  20. Posting comments on other blogs is overrated. Writing a quality post and politely emailing a dozen bloggers in a relevant niche can do wonders.
  21. Respond to your commenters, especially the ones who disagree. It’s the best way build community and it shows readers that you value their time and effort.
  22. Obsessively reading other blogs and checking traffic stats are not productive activities. Your time is better spent doing things that actually increase traffic like creating content, doing research, and posting to relevant forums.
  23. Once you have a bit of success don’t flaunt it but let other people know.
  24. Make use of blog carnivals. They’re the easiest way to build links and find readers before anyone knows who you are. They’ve helped me crack the Technorati 5000 just today.
  25. Display your best posts on every page in a prominent location. You want readers to find your best content and get hooked. Why bury your best work in the archives?
  26. Read blogs about blogging. They’re a great source of knowledge, especially about the technical aspect. Don’t follow all the advice. If you do, chances are you’ll end up somewhere in the middle. Sure you won’t make a bad impression but most readers will forget about you.
  27. Do what works for you. Be completely genuine. Trying to promote a fake persona isn’t sustainable. People will see through it

Websites are quickly becoming one of the most popular ways of advertising. Whether it be a business, its product or service or something completely different, everyone of all ages is turning to the web as a method of getting their message out there. With the popularity of this marketing medium increasing and the number of websites always growing, it is obvious that everyone wants to appear at the top of Google's search engine rankings. Achieving such a task is not an easy feat, however with a bit of perseverance, one can definitely improve their chances of reaching that glorious first page result.
Given that there is a heap of websites out there who are on the first page, what is their secret? It is a little industry term called "SEO" and it stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO basically consists of the customization of your website, its content and its internal and external links to assist in the overall indexing and ranking of your website in popular search engines. There are many contributing factors that are used in determining a website's ranking and every search engine is different. This makes trying to optimize your site for Google, Yahoo, Live and the many others quite a painstaking task.

As most of us are aware, Google is currently the most popular search engine for the majority of Internet users. As such, it is only normal that we'd want to focus our sights on achieving a higher ranking within Google first with the hope that the rest will follow. To do this, we must start a journey that could potentially take months before we start seeing any real change, however we have to start somewhere.

Our journey begins by defining some of the key contributing factors that Google uses to determine a website's and webpage's ranking within its results. These factors range from keyword use to manipulating internal and external links and the líst goes on. To get you started, we have listed the top twenty factors that you should focus on in order to help get your website that little bit closer to the top of the search engine results listings.

Keyword Use Factors

The following components relate to the use of search query terms in determining the rank of a particular page.

1. Keyword Use in Title Tag - Placing the targeted search term or phrase in the title tag of the web page's HTML header.

2. Keyword Use in Body Text - Using the targeted search term in the visible, HTML text of the page.

3. Relationship of Body Text Content to Keywords - Topical relevance of text on the page compared to targeted keywords.

4. Keyword Use in H1 Tag - Creating an H1 tag with the targeted search term/phrase.

5.
Keyword Use in Domain Name & Page URL - Including the targeted term/phrase in the registered domain name, i.e. keyword.com plus target terms in the webpage URL, i.e. seomoz.org/keyword-phrase.

Page Attributes

The following elements comprise how Google interprets specific data about a webpage independent of keywords.

6. Link Popularity within the Site's Internal Link Structure - Refers to the number and importance of internal links pointing to the target page.

7. Quality/Relevance of Links to External Sites/Pages - Do links on the page point to high quality, topically-related pages?

8. Age of Document - Older pages may be perceived as more authoritative while newer pages may be more temporarily relevant.

9. Amount of Indexable Text Content - Refers to the literal quantity of visible HTML text on a page.

10. Quality of the Document Content (as measured algorithmically) - Assuming search engines can use text, visual or other analysis methods to determine the validity and value of content, this metric would provide some level of rating.

Site/Domain Attributes

The factors below contribute to Google's rankings based on the site/domain on which a page resides.

11. Global Link Popularity of Site - The overall link weight/authority as measured by links from any and all sites across the web (both link quality and quantity).

12. Age of Site - Not the date of original registration of the domain, but rather the launch of indexable content seen by the search engines (note that this can change if a domain switches ownership).

13. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links to Site - The subject-specific relationship between the sites/pages linking to the target page and the target keyword.

14. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community - The link weight/authority of the target website amongst its topical peers in the online world.

15. Rate of New Inbound Links to Site - The frequency and timing of external sites linking in to the given domain.

Inbound Link Attribute

These pieces affect Google's weighting of links from external websites pointing to a page and ultimately will assist in the ranking of that page.

16. Anchor Text of Inbound Link.

17. Global Link Popularity of Linking Site.

18. Topical Relationship of Linking Page.

19. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community - The link weight/authority of the target website amongst its topical peers in the online world.

20. Age of Link.

Negative Crawling/Ranking Attributes

There are also some points we should make before you start getting your hands dirty. With any type of SEO marketing, there are some things that can actually have a negative impact on your ranking. These following components may negatively affect a spider's ability to crawl a page or its rankings at Google.

  • Server is Often Inaccessible to Bots.
  • Content Very Similar or Duplicate of Existing Content in the Index.
  • External Links to Low Quality/Spam Sites.
  • Duplicate Title/Meta Tags on Many Pages.
  • Overuse of Targeted Keywords (Stuffing/Spamming).
It's now time to get busy! Start prioritizing your tasks, modifying your content and building your internal and external links to meet some of the above guidelines. Keep in mind that improving indexing is mostly a technical task and improving ranking is mostly a business/marketing strategy. What might work now may not work in the future and finally, it takes time. Loads of time. Still, with a bit of trial and error and a good dose of persistence, you can achieve the search engine ranking you're afte

One of the most striking things that hit me in my analysis of the 30 most visited blogs at Truth Laid Bear was the small number of blogs using the Adsense program. Only 8 of the 30 (26%) had any Adsense ads on their pages - most instead opting for BlogAds as their income stream of choice. A number of you have also emailed me or commented on this after my previous post (remember these 30 blogs are not THE most visited blogs - just the most visited ones with sitemeter stats tracking them).

As someone who uses Adsense extensively in my blogging this was initially a somewhat shocking finding. My Digital Camera blog is down at the bottom of the list at number 30 with 12518 daily visitors - I use Adsense extensively there and make over $200 per day from doing so on that blog alone (it is my highest earning blog to date). It would be easy to assume that a blog like Daily Kos with 35 times the daily traffic should earning 35 times the money if they used Adsense ($7500 per day).

This would be a false assumption.

Why? Its simply about Topic.

The majority of the blogs in the list have a political or news/commentary theme - I’d classify 22 of the top 30 this way. Of the 8 remaining 3 are tech related, 4 are gossip/celebrity focussed and 1 is a metablog covering all of those themes (ie tech, politics, culture etc). This last blog is BlogCritics who I’ve spoken with the owners of and asked why they don’t use Adsense - the reason is that they have many contributer - some of whom use strong language in their posting and comments which doesn’t fit with Google’s guidelines.

Political Blogs - Whilst they generate some massive traffic, Adsense is never going to be the income stream of choice for these bloggers for a number of reasons:

• They have no control over which ads do and don’t appear - You can just imagine the variety of ads that could be served to a piece written on George Bush. I don’t know too many political bloggers who would be happy to have an ad that they are opposed to running on their blog. Adsense has no way of telling if your blog is pro or against him - so it will randomly serve ads (if there are any). For instance if you check out Washington Monthly you’ll see an example of a political blog running adsense in their right hand sidebar and notice the variety of ads that are shown there from page to page.

• Low earnings per click - Political ads just don’t pay much. Whilst during the election there might have been a bit more competition between advertisers as there was more at stake, in general ads about politics (which there is no real product to sell) don’t tend to generate high bids from advertisers.

With these factors in mind - a better business model for such sites would obviously be a system that gives the blogger a choice about which ads appear on their blog and that are tied more to impression level or relevant ads than to ‘click value’. As a result BlogAds tend to do well on them.

Gossip/Celebrity Blogs - Again blogs of this nature have the distinct advantage of generating a lot of impressions due to the inquisitive nature of human beings who want to know others business and who have a fascination with celebrity. However they have the distinct disadvantage of not being big earners with Adsense. Once again this comes down to a lack of earnings per click. I run a number of celebrity blogs which at times generate very high traffic - but their CPM (earnings per thousand impressions) is generally the lowest among my blogs. This again is largely due to the fact that there is no high value product associate with celebrities. Sure there are a few books, DVDs, concert tickets and movies - but advertisers are not willing to shell out big dollars to get you to buy these lower ticket value items.

It is possible to make some reasonable money from celebrity blogs - but the rate of return per visitor will always be lower than other topics of blog - to make it big with Adsense on a gossip blog would require a lot of traffic and the fact is that they can probably earn more with other types of ads (impression based ones or site sponsorship deals would be more suitable).

Tech Blogs - whilst there are not as many of these in the ‘top 30′ list they are perhaps the best suited ones to using Adsense. This is largely due to the fact that they specifically focus upon items that can be purchased - some of which can be of a high retail value. In terms of ‘click value’ - these sorts of blogs do generate a higher return than political and gossip topics - but they are not the highest earning topics out there. In fact my Digital Camera Blog may be my biggest earner (total earnings) but in terms of click value its in the middle of the pack and perhaps even trailing the field a little. It is still well worth doing though as the combination of a slightly higher click value and some reasonable traffic pay off nicely.

I am a little surprised that the other tech blogs in the list don’t use Adsense as prominently as they could. I would have thought that with their higher traffic levels and profile that it would have been worthwhile to do so. Having said this it is probably due to them having better alternatives for their ad space.

Take Home Advice - So the take home advice is that not all blogs are suitable for Adsense. Other topics that will always be an uphill battle include:

• Religion - similar problems with politics - ie low click value and difficulty in serving ads that relate tightly with your perspective

• Adult Content - Google simply doesn’t allow ads to be served on pages with explicit content (same story with gambling I’ve heard)

• Sport - Similar problem to the celebrity blog - with no real high ticket value product attached to these keywords you need a lot of traffic to make much from these blogs from Adsense.

I’m sure there are others. Feel free to leave a comment below and let the rest of us know what you think. What topics have you found don’t work too well on Adsense? Which ones do?
