How Google detects Invalid clicks

by Poonam | 1:45 AM in | comments (2)

We always hear that Google has a sophisticated system to detect the invalid clicks, and result in termination of the cheaters' account. But, how can Google do that? In this post, I summarize those ways that Google depends on to detect whether the clicks on your site are invalid or not. Google will not first ban your account immediately. Rather, they will first flag your account and Google will keep a closer eye to your account. In some occasion, they may send you a warning letter to notify your situation; but sometimes not.

1. IP Address

It is the easist and must be recognized by everyone. If those clicks on your ads are originated from the same IP Address as the one used for accessing your AdSense account, your account is flagged.

2. Click Through Rate (CTR)

Normally, Click thru Rate should not excees 10%. Otherwise, Google will flag your account. For your information, normal CTR should ranges from 0.5% - 10%.

3. Physical Location

Google has good tracing software and technology. They can trace traffics origin down to the small town. So, using different computers with different IP address does not secure anything. So, don't try to click your ads in various internet cafes. That will kill you.

4. Cookies

Most home users do not use static IP Address for Internet connection. In most cases just disconnect and reconnect will give you a new IP Address. But don't forget, Google has set cookies on your computer. They can trace these cookies and see whether they originate from the same computer.

5. Click Pattern 1

It is also suspicious when people click on their clicks and then run away immediately (hit-and-run). But normally, people will surf for a while inside your pages and then click on the ads they want.

6. Click Pattern 2

why this computer / IP address / person is so trigger-click-happy on this particular website but never click on the ads on other sites?

7. Click Pattern 3

And why is it that people accessing these sites direct (type-in URL or from bookmark) tend to be very active ad-clickers compared with those referred from search engine or other sites?

8.Other Google Services

Apart from Google Adsense, Google also provide a series of services to us. Don't just think that it is safe if you do not log in your adsense account and click on your ads. What other Google services do they provide to us? Here are some: Gmail (most poeple are using it), Google Earth, Google Calendar, Google Search, Google Toolbar, Google Talk, Google Sitemap, Google Desktop, Blogger, or even Youtube (coz Google has just recently acquired it).

10. Search Engine Ranking

Your website is not indexed on any search engine, not linked by any prominent website, but get consistently high traffic? How come people can access your website and click your ads? That will make Google to smell a rat.

11. Webpage design

How about the "Please click a link below" or "donate us by clicking the ads"? These kinds of encouragement is not in line with Google's TOS. Google can use their winning search engine, or even human eyes to check your sites from time to time.

12. Advertisers conversion rate

Ad click is one thing. But does it bring value to the advertisers? If none of the clicks on your site translate to conversion to the advertiser, you are in trouble. First the Smart-Pricing hits, then your AdSense account disabled.

This is the second step you should take..signing up for adsense.THEN GO THRU THE ADSENSE POLICY. THE MAIN POINTS OF WHICH EVERY PUBLISHER SHOULD KEEP IN MIND ARE RIGHT HERE BELOW IN AN EASY LANGUAGE: 1. NEVER CLICK YOUR OWN ADSENSE ADS OR GET THEM CLICKED FOR WHATEVER REASON.INCREASING YOUR INCOME BY CLICKING YOUR ADS OR INDIRECTLY, OFFERING INCENTIVES FOR CLICKS, USE OF AUTOMATED CLICKING TOOLS, OR OTHER DECEPTIVE SOFTWARE WILL ULTIMATELY BOOT YOU OUT OF THE ADSENSE PROGRAM AFTER WHICH YOU ARE BANNED FOR EVER.ADSENSE IS VERY SMART TO DETECT FRAUDULENT CLICKS. IF AT ALL YOU WANT TO CHECK THE ADS THAT ARE GOING TO APPEAR ON YOUR WEB PAGES USE THE PREVIEW TOOL. INSTALLATIION INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREVIEW TOOL:CLICK THIS LINK ADSENSE PREVIEW TOOL AND SELECT SAVE TARGET AS... SAVE THE REGISTRY FILE (.REG) TO YOUR DESKTOP.DOUBLE-CLICK THE FILE FROM YOUR DESKTOP. A CONFIRMATION WINDOW WILL APPEAR - CLICK YES TO CONTINUE. THE REGISTRY UPDATE WILL SELF-INSTALL. RESTART INTERNET EXPLORER BY CLOSING ALL OPEN IE WINDOWS.THAT'S IT! OPTIONS WILL BE ADDED TO YOUR RIGHT CLICK MENU FOR LAUNCHING THE PREVIEW TOOL AS—--”GOOGLE ADSENSE PREVEIW TOOL” . PLEASE DO NOT CLICK FROM WITHIN THE AD FORMAT ITSELF, OR RELEVANT ADS WILL NOT APPEAR WITHIN THE PREVIEW TOOL.BE WITHIN THE RULES AND YOU WILL FIND THAT YOU CAN EARN SUBSTANTIALLY.

2. NEVER CHANGE THE ADSENSE CODE. THERE ARE ENOUGH MEANS OF ADSENSE OPTIMIZATION & CUSTOMIZATIONS AVAILABLE TO CHANGE THE COLOUR, BACKGROUND OR BORDER TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS. THE CODE MAY STOP WORKING AND CHANGING THE CODE OR TAMPERING WITH IT VIOLATES THE ADSENSE TERMS OF SERVICE.(TOS)

3. DO NOT FILL YOUR PAGE FULL OF ADS.DO NOT PLACE MORE THAN 3 AD UNITS AND 3 AD LINKS OR 2 ADSENSE SEARCH BOXES ON ANY WEB PAGE. ANYWAY, ADS WILL NOT APPEAR IN THOSE UNITS EVEN IF YOU PLACE MORE AD UNITS.

4. RUNNING COMPETITIVE CONTEXTUAL TEXT AD OR SEARCH SERVICES ON THE SAME SITE WHICH OFFER GOOGLE ADSENSE COMPETITION IN THEIR FIELD IS NOT ALLOWED. LINK STRUCTURES RESEMBLING THE ADSENSE ADS IS A STRICT NO.RUNNING OTHER COMPETITIVE SEARCH TOOLS ON THE SAME PAGES WHICH HAVE ADSENSE POWERED GOOGLE SEARCH IS ALSO NOT ALLOWED. THEY DO ALLOW AFFILIATE OR LIMITED-TEXT LINKS. UPDATE: GOOGLE HAS ALLOWED YOU TO RUN CONTEXTUAL ADVERTISING LIKE YAHOO ADS, AUCTION ADS, ETC PROVIDED THE ADS DO NOT RESEMBLE ADSENSE ADS.IF IN DOUBT ALWAYS ASK FOR CLARIFICATION FROM GOOGLE.

5. CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION RELATING TO YOUR LIKE THE CTR, CPM AND INCOME DERIVED VIA INDIVIDUAL AD UNITS OR ANY OTHER CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION THEY MAY REVEAL TO YOU ARE NOT TO BE DISCLOSED. YOU MAY MAKE PUBLIC THE TOTAL MONEY YOU MAKE AS PER RECENT UPDATES TO THE TOS.

6. LABEL HEADINGS AS “SPONSORED LINKS” OR “ADVERTISEMENTS” ONLY. OTHER LABELS ARE NOT ALLOWED.

7. ADSENSE ADS SHOULD OPEN ON THE SAME PAGE. IF ADS ARE OPENING IN A NEW PAGE ON YOUR SITE, CORRECT IT NOW AS GOOGLE DOES NOT WANT NEW PAGES OPENING FROM CLICKED ADS.

8. ONE ACCOUNT WILL DO. IF YOU FEAR THAT IF ONE ACCOUNT IS CLOSED DOWN FOR VIOLATION OF TOS, AND SO HAVE OPENED, 5 ACCOUNTS FOR 5 DIFFERENT WEBSITES,THEY WILL CLOSE ALL ACCOUNTS WHEN THEY FIND OUT. PLACE THE CODES. THEY WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DETECTED BY GOOGLE TO DISPLAY PLAY RELEVANT ADS.

9. ADVERTISERS PAY ONLY FOR CONTENT BASED ADS. CONTENT DRIVES RELEVANT ADS.SO PLACE YOUR ADS ON CONTENT PAGES. ALTHOUGH YOU MIGHT MANAGE SOME CLICKS FROM ERROR, LOGIN, REGISTRATION, “THANK YOU” OR WELCOME PAGES, PARKING PAGES OR POP UPS, THIS TOO WILL GET YOU BANNED FROM ADSENSE. 10. ALTERATION OF COLOURS AND BORDER IS A FACILITY TO BLEND OR CONTRAST ADS AS PER YOUR SITE REQUIREMENTS. I HAVE SEEN MANY SITES WHERE THE URL PART IS OF THE SAME COLOUR----. AS THE BACKGROUND. WHILE BLENDING THE AD WITH YOUR SITE IS A GOOD IDEA, HIDING RELEVANT COMPONENTS OF THE ADS IS NOT ALLOWED. BLOCKING VISIBILITY OF ADS BY OVERLAPPING, POP UPS, IMAGES, ETC. SHOULD BE AVOIDED AS IT IS NOT ALLOWED. 11. SENDING YOUR ADS BY HTML FORMATTED EMAILS LOOK GOOD AND ALLOW PLACEMENT OF THESE JAVASCRIPT ADS. BUT IT IS NOT ALLOWED AS PER TOS. YOU DO NOT WANT IMPRESSIONS REGISTERING ON THEIR LOGS FROM ANY EMAIL EVEN ONCE. 12. KEEP TRACK OF YOUR CONTENT

SO ADSENSE IS NOT ALLOWED ON SEVERAL NON CONTENT PAGES. BUT IT IS ALSO NOT ALLOWED ON SEVERAL CONTENT PAGES TOO.LIKE PAGES WITH---- MP3, VIDEO, NEWS GROUPS, AND IMAGE,PORN,VIOLENCE,ILLEGAL,CONTENT. 13. DO NOT ALTER THE RESULTS AFTER AD CLICKS OR SEARCHES - ENSURE YOU ARE NOT IN ANY WAY ALTERING THE SITE WHICH THE USER REACHES TO AFTER CLICKING THE ADS.

14. AVOID EXCESSIVE ADVERTISING AND STUFFING A LOT OF KEYWORDS.- GOOGLE ADSENSE WITH CORRECT PLACEMENT, FOCUSED CONTENT AND HIGH TRAFFIC WILL GET YOU MUCH MORE INCOME THAN OTHER PROGRAMS, SO EXCESSIVE ADVERTISING IS NOT REQUIRED. KEYWORD STUFFING DOES TARGET BETTER FOCUSED ADS, BUT OVERDOING IT IS NOT REQUIRED. 15. ENSURE YOU LANGUAGE IS SUPPORTED.IF YOUR WEB PAGES LANGUAGE IS NOT SUPPORTED, DO NOT USE THE CODE ON SUCH PAGES. 16.WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE GOOGLE ADSENSE REFERRAL PROGRAM, YOU ARE ALLOWED TO PUT ONLY 2 REFERRAL BUTTONS FOR ADSENSE REFERRAL, ADWORDS REFERRAL, GOOGLE PACK AND FIREFOX WITH GOOGLE TOOLBAR REFERRAL. 17. NEVER USE ADSENSE ADS AS ALTERNATE URLS.18. DO NOT CONFUSE VISITORS WITH ADJACENT IMAGES. MAKE SURE THAT THE ADS AND IMAGES ARE NOT ARRANGED IN A WAY THAT COULD EASILY MISLEAD OR CONFUSE YOUR VISITORS. WHENEVER IN DOUBT, IT IS BETTER TO ASK FOR ADSENSE HELP FROM THE LEARNED AND HELPFUL STAFF OF GOOGLE ADSENSE.GUYS THERE ARE VERY HELPFUL

Keywords-11

by Poonam | 1:21 AM in | comments (0)

Niche products or services that you can create a website for that will attract targeted users.Try and find high paying keywords and you will be earning more.So in effect you are to find keywords for which the advertisers are paying more per click, build original and rich content around that key word,in which case you are likely to earn more per click even if you get 3 or 4 visitors to your site per day.For finding variations of keywords which are being searched, with regard to your content use this TOOL Then you have to find high paying keywords that advertisers are bidding on ie.. keywords that can fetch you more per click. For this you have to find out the avg cvc of the keywords.A low avg cpc will not earn you much.Select that keyword with a high avg cpc.You will have to join Adwords which is free to use the tool for avg cpc. Once you have signed up Go here.....https://adwords.google.com/select/TrafficEstimatorSandbox Type in a keyword to find the bid rates the keywords are commanding. Also find out how much they are paying per click. If you find a keyword with a low CPC then you are not going to earn much out of it
Check out the recent searches and whether the traffic for that keyword is high enough. Remember a high avg cost per click may not always get you good returns.Be judicious and select a keyword which has high avg cpc, reasonable traffic, but with no/little supply of content targetting that keyword. In other words be judicious, not greedy.

AdSense Video Ads

by Poonam | 1:19 AM in | comments (0)

This option of videos is available only to AdSense publishers of certain countries. The concept is relatively new, but it’s already becoming popular with with both advertisers and web hosters. To those relying on ad traffic to make their money, the video ads seem to do well,as it is more eye catching than text ads. They are more interesting,as they are sort of mini commercials. If the ads run are really relevant to the content, they can be a money spinner. You may be paid, sometimes by views, usually 1,000 or so views, and some may involve a need to click through.
they may or may not pay out more than text ads, they certainly tend to stimulate more interest to a web site.Your site also looks kind of hi-tech.Again like text ads you do get targeted ads, which increases the chances of a view or a click-through.Many may think that a site loading time may increase, but this is simply not true, as they appear as static ads until a person clicks on them.

what are CPC and CPM Ads

by Poonam | 1:10 AM in | comments (0)

When will Google pay us? Why there are some clicks on my ads, but there are no earning? I am pretty sure that those are not invalid clicks, then how come? What is the difference between CPC ads and CPM ads? On what basis they will lead to earning for me? In this post, I am going to explain the difference between the two.

For CPC ad, you will get paid whenever there is a click on this kind of ad, provided that the click is valid. The CPC is the amount an advertiser pays each time a user clicks on his/her ad. In Google Adsense, most of the ads is CPC ads, and you will get paid when there is click on it. Most of them pay in a range from 0.01 to 2 dollars. You should be lucky when you recieve two dollar for a click. Nearly all of the contextual ads and a portion of image ads belong to this kind of advertisements.

For CPM ad, it means Cost Per 1000 Impression. Advertisers running CPM ads set their desired price per 1000 ads served. You will get paid whenever there are 1000 impressions for that CPM ad. CPM ads compete against pay-per-click (or CPC, cost per click) ads in Google's ad auction system, so only the highest performing ads will be served to your pages. Advertisers will need to bid a higher CPM than the existing CPC ads in order to show. Both image ads and text ads can be paid on CPM basis, and both of them are always site-targeted. CPM text ads will expand to take up the entire ad unit. One thing that you should always bear in mind is that, for CPM ads, your earnings are associated with impressions only, rather than clicks. Google pays you each time a CPM ad is shown on your page, rather than when a user clicks on the ad and views the advertiser's site.
So, you may wonder how you can check the earning performance of your CPM ads. Actually, the statistics (ad impression and clicks) of CPM ads will be shown together with that of CPC ads in general report in your account. Sometimes, you may notice that even though you've received impressions for CPM ads, you're not displaying any earnings. No worry. This is because an advertiser may pay as little as $0.50 for each 1000 impressions of an ad. With each impression worth $0.0005, you could receive up to 9 ad impressions for total revenue of $0.0045 without any clicks or earnings appearing in your report. So, you may afraid your earning will be lost when it cannot come to a significant figure. No worry. Although Google will only show earning that is more than one cent, all the earning from impressions of CPM ads that is below one cents will be recorded and accumulated. It will then show whenever it reaches one cent.
Since CPM ads are paid on the number of ad impression, the location of the CPM ads highly affect the overall earnings for you. For example, if you put your CPM ad on top of your site, you definitely recieve more ad impression for that and have higher income, and vice versa.
Although there is no offical figure to prove, there is a general belief that most of the image ads are paid on CPM basis, while only little text ads are paid on CPM basis. To be honest, from my experience, CPC ads perform a lot better than CPM ads. The only suitable place to put CPM ads is probably the forum site. It is because in a forum site, the usual and regular visitors already get used to the ads there. They tend to have a much lower CTR, and thus CPM ads (which are not paid on clicks) are the most effective to maximize your earning.

1. Have an “Advertise with Us” Banner on your site

This is the single most important issue. It should click to an Advertising information page and have an easy way to contact you for more information and rates. Key points: Make it a graphical image or a tab. Keep it above the fold.

2. Keep the ads on your site specific to your site

Don’t have smiley ads and wallpaper ads if your site is site is about mobile phones.

3. Show them the banners

If you currently have no paid placements on your site, put up house ads or partner ads in the same spot you would run a paid spot. (A house ad refers to banners for other products or sites that you or your company own)

4. Throw up a free bonus ad.

By putting a free advertisement on your site, you may not only encourage similar ads or competitors to that product, but the company you added for free may decide to advertise with you. Ask for full disclosure of the performance of the campaign in return. (Total clicks, total purchases etc. ) Key points. Put the free bonus up with a direct URL without tracking tags or affiliate tags.

5. Show your site stats.

You need to show at least the basics for site statical information: Monthly unique visitors and total number of impressions are the 2 key ones. Other less important can be Google PR & Alexa rank.

6. User demographic information. Know your audience.

The bare minimum is Male/Female % and average age of your readers. Other potentially useful information includes geographic, HHI, single/married, number of kids. etc. How do you get this info? You can do site polls, survey’s, or get more detailed stats from ComScore or Quantcast.com

7. Have an ‘About Us’ section.

Clearly explain who you are and what your site is about. And also why you are an ‘authority’ on what you are writing about, and why anyone should care about what you have to say.

8. Don’t use Google AdSense on your site.

OK, this could be the most painful one for most people especially if you are generating a few hundred bucks a month from it already. But Google ad sense devalues your site and makes it look unprofessional. You have to ask yourself, “Do I want some real revenue from my site or Google’s table scraps.”

9. Keep your blog on topic.

If you are all over the map in regards to topics about which you talk about, advertisers won’t know if they are a good fit for your site.

10. Keep your blog professional.

If you are talking about your cat, (Matt Cutts), ranting about your drive to work, swearing or bashing every product you can think about, it will scare away advertisers

8 Tips to Optimize Adsense Units

by Poonam | 1:04 AM in | comments (0)

Adsense is one of the most common revenue generators for blogs and websites. Usually you can drastically improve your click-through rate and overall earnings by positioning the ads wisely, by improving the content targeting or by optimizing the ad units directly. Below I will cover the last point, how to optimize the Adsense units with 8 simple tips:

  1. The three top performing ad units are: 336×280 large rectangle, 300×250 inline rectangle and 160×600 wide skyscraper. Consider using those units if possible, but bear in mind that other formats might be more suitable for your website design.
  2. The most successful link color is blue. This fact is connected with the roots of the Internet where all major websites used to feature blue links.
  3. Apart from blue links you can also use a link color that matches the pattern of your website (i.e. If you use green links make the Adsense links of the same color).
  4. As a general rule of thumb, blend (no border, same background) your Adsense units if your website has a light color scheme and contrast (border, contrasting background) the units if you are using a dark color scheme
  5. If the ads are placed within the content you should avoid using borders while ad units outside of the content can use borders to call attention.
  6. If your website has mainly repeat visitors (like Forums) you can rotate the background color of the units to reduce ad blindness
  7. Consider removing the “Advertise on this site” message from your units. This can be done on the control panel under the “My Account” section, disabling the “Onsite Advertiser Sign-Up” feature.
  8. Test, test and test. Every website is unique so make sure you test with different colors and formats and track the results to fine tune your Adsense units.
